Argentina expands programs for active senior participation
During a training session at the Faculty of Law, Nelly Pintos, coordinator of the Directorate of Children’s Rights and the Adult Age Area, outlined recent shifts in public policies for older adults. She noted that many retirees now seek social reintegration through clubs, senior centers, and activities that allow them to share their experience.
Pintos highlighted a national program that places seniors at the centre of initiatives, citing a recent event in Colonia Carolina where about 200 older people gathered, celebrated a 100‑year‑old’s birthday, danced, and played bingo. The event, overseen by Minister José Yrigoyen, reinforced the commitment to expand such activities across municipalities and senior homes.
She also addressed family tensions and the tendency toward institutionalisation, explaining that each request for admission to a care facility is examined to understand underlying reasons, with staff working directly with children and grandchildren to find solutions.
