Argentina expands state surveillance via AI and drones
Amnesty International has released a report alleging that the administration of President Javier Milei is expanding a “techno-authoritarian infrastructure of social control” in Argentina through mass surveillance.
Between 2024 and 2025, the Argentinian Ministry of National Security reportedly spent at least $1.2 million on surveillance technologies. These acquisitions include facial recognition systems, social media monitoring tools, and aerial drones. Specifically, the report notes the purchase of 69 drones and 11 ground stations capable of real-time image transmission and monitoring of public databases.
The organization claims these tools are being deployed without adequate democratic oversight, impact assessments, or human rights safeguards. Amnesty International warns that this expansion of state capacity to collect and process personal data creates an environment of intimidation that affects journalists, activists, and protesters, potentially leading to self-censorship and the suppression of peaceful assembly.
