Argentina extends five‑year currency swap with China
The Banco Central de la República Argentina (BCRA) renewed its bilateral currency swap with the Banco Popular de China (PBoC) for a total of 130 billion yuan, equivalent to roughly US$19‑20 billion. The agreement, signed a day before the previous contract’s expiry on 6 August, extends the swap’s term from three to five years, keeping it in force until 2031. The active tranche of 35 billion yuan (about US$5 billion) remains available to support Argentina’s foreign‑exchange reserves, financial stability, and bilateral trade and investment.
The renewal was confirmed by BCRA president Santiago Bausili after meetings with his Chinese counterpart Pan Gongsheng. While President Javier Milei has publicly criticized ties with Beijing, the extension provides predictable liquidity for the Argentine central bank and does not affect the country’s gross reserves. The swap, first signed in 2009, is a key tool for managing Argentina’s external financing needs.
