Argentina eyes beef export surge to China amid supply gaps
Argentina is positioned to capitalize on a temporary window of opportunity in the Chinese beef market. Due to supply gaps in competing nations—specifically Australia running out of export quotas and Brazil sharply reducing shipments—Argentina and Uruguay may face significantly less competition in China for the next 60 days.
Export prices for specific cuts, such as beef shank and forequarter, have risen to $7,700 per metric ton, up from $5,400 a year ago. While the cattle market in Argentina shows tightening supply, with shipments to slaughter falling 13% between January and August compared to the previous year, the increased demand from Chinese buyers is driving value for export-quality cows.
Industry leaders, including Daniel Urcía of the Federación de Industrias Frigoríficas Regionales Argentinas (Fifra), emphasize that while the market is currently well-supplied, there is significant potential for growth in high-quality products. Chinese consumers are showing an increasing preference for meat with higher marbling, presenting an opportunity for Argentina to expand its market share by shifting toward premium offerings.
