Food security and social assistance trends in South America

Recent data from Uruguay shows a significant reduction in food insecurity. According to preliminary results from the Continuous Household Survey, moderate or severe food insecurity in households with children under six fell from 18.9% to 14.8% over the past year. President Yamandú Orsi noted that while this represents the largest year-on-year reduction for this group since 2022, the government aims to eliminate hunger entirely.

In Argentina, officials are managing social assistance amid economic challenges. In Tierra del Fuego, Minister of Citizen Welfare and Justice Lucía Rossi stated that while the government has increased food assistance and direct aid to vulnerable families, there are no guarantees that resources will suffice if the economic crisis deepens. Similarly, the ministry reports providing approximately 7,500 food modules and maintaining 3,000 'Bienestar' cards to support families facing housing and health needs.

Other regional concerns include potential collapses in Argentine union health insurance funds due to a lack of resources, and high rates of childhood malnutrition in isolated indigenous communities in Colombia, specifically in regions like Chocó and La Guajira.
