Argentina faces historic underfunding of its science and technology sector

Professor Diego Mazzitelli, a physicist at Instituto Balseiro and CONICET researcher, warned that Argentina is experiencing the largest disinvestment in its scientific and technological system. Salary freezes, cuts to research budgets and uncertainty over scholarships are causing established researchers to emigrate and discouraging young talent from entering academia. He noted that the funding shortfall threatens the country’s capacity to train new scientists, sustain university programs and maintain critical institutions such as the Comisión Nacional de Energía Atómica.

The issue is part of a broader trend of Argentine scholars seeking doctoral, post‑doctoral and research positions abroad. While international mobility can foster collaboration, the current financial crisis heightens the risk of a permanent "brain drain" and weakens Argentina’s ability to participate in global knowledge networks. The situation underscores growing asymmetries in scientific infrastructure and funding compared with the United States, Europe and China.
