Argentina faces rising suicide rates among youth

Argentina is facing a significant rise in suicide rates, which has become the leading cause of death for citizens aged 15 to 34. Data from the Observatorio de Política Criminal (OPC) indicates that in 2025, there were 5,209 recorded suicide deaths, representing a 22.6% increase from the previous year. Since 2017, the total number of suicides has risen by 57.6%.

In addition to fatalities, official records from SNIS, DEIS, and BEN report approximately 24 suicide attempts occurring daily among the 15-to-34 age demographic. The current suicide rate stands at 11.8 per 100,000 inhabitants.

In response to these statistics, the Asociación Argentina de Salud Mental (AASM) has described the situation as a serious sanitary and social crisis. Families and mental health specialists recently held a demonstration in central Buenos Aires to raise awareness and demand urgent public policies and increased state funding for mental health services.
