Argentina faces sharp decline in birth rates
Argentina is experiencing an accelerated demographic transformation, with births dropping by 46% since 2015. Data presented at the XXII Argentine Congress of Reproductive Medicine reveals that the country recorded 413,135 births in 2024, compared to 770,040 in 2015.
The global fertility rate in Argentina has fallen to approximately 1.2 children per woman, significantly below the 2.1 threshold required for population replacement without major migration. Experts warn that the country is approaching the end of its demographic dividend, a period where the working-age population grows faster than dependent sectors.
Economists and demographers suggest that Argentina may have about a decade of demographic momentum remaining before the proportion of the working-age population begins to decline, necessitating urgent adaptations to the economy, productivity, and the pension system.
