Argentina's Cape Verde win sparks massive fan celebrations

Argentina defeated Cape Verde 3‑2 on Friday night to advance to the round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup. The victory prompted a wave of public celebrations across the country. In Buenos Aires more than 140,000 supporters gathered at fan‑fest venues, including around 20,000 in Palermo’s Plaza Seeber, as well as crowds in Villa Devoto and Nueva Pompeya, where giant screens showed the match and live music, games and food stalls were provided. Police deployed extensive security operations in several cities; in Bariloche a coordinated police presence involving mobile units, special operations and motorized support ensured the celebrations proceeded safely, containing a brief nighttime brawl and treating a minor injury to an officer. In other towns such as Añatuya and Mendoza fans also celebrated, though a fierce fight between women briefly marred the festivities in Añatuya. A viral video showed a Boca fan breaking his father‑in‑law’s television in the euphoria following the win. The celebrations highlighted the passion of Argentine supporters and the authorities’ efforts to keep public gatherings orderly.

Argentina’s historic performance record in World Cup round‑of‑16 matches was also noted, with the team having won seven of ten such ties since the stage was introduced in 1986.
