Argentina financial markets see ADR surge and country risk volatility
Argentine financial markets have experienced significant volatility, with Argentine Depositary Receipts (ADRs) rising by as much as 8% on Wall Street. This surge was led by the banking sector, specifically Supervielle and Banco Macro. Locally, the Merval index, measured in dollars, grew by 3.2% to reach u$s 1884.
Despite the equity gains, the country risk index, calculated by JP Morgan, has fluctuated around the technical threshold of 500 basis points, reaching levels between 503 and 512 points. This indicator reflects the interest rate differential demanded by the market for local sovereign debt in dollars compared to risk-free bonds.
The market movement follows a 6.4% increase in the Government Confidence Index (ICG) from the Universidad Torcuato Di Tella. Concurrently, the government is advancing legislative reforms, including a proposal to reform the Central Bank of the Republic of Argentina (BCRA) to limit its mandate and restrict financing to the Treasury, as well as new tax simplification measures to encourage dollar deposits.
