Argentina financial indicators show stability as country risk falls below 600 points
Argentina's financial indicators have shown signs of stabilization and improvement. The country risk index, measured by JP Morgan, recently fell below the 600-point threshold, reaching levels around 579 to 589 points. This decline was driven by institutional investor optimism, leading to a rally in dollar-denominated sovereign bonds.
In the local currency market, the official retail dollar showed stability, closing near $1,535. Financial exchange rates, including the MEP and CCL, remained contained. While the S&P Merval index experienced mixed performance with marginal fluctuations, some Argentine ADRs in New York saw gains, though service companies like Telecom faced declines.
Regarding the cost of living, data from Fundar indicates that Argentina remains one of the most expensive countries in Latin America for dining out and purchasing clothing when measured in dollars. Despite a slight moderation in prices during July, the country maintains high relative costs in these sectors compared to neighbors like Chile, Brazil, and Peru. This is attributed to inflationary inertia, high tax burdens, and exchange rate dynamics.
