Argentina finds low breast‑cancer awareness and high cardiovascular risk in women
On International Day of Action for Women's Health, a study by Fundación Instituto Natura and Avon revealed that only four out of ten Argentine women have sufficient information to care for their breast health. Breast cancer remains the leading cause of oncologic death among women in Argentina, with more than 22,000 new cases and around 7,000 deaths each year. Early detection through mammography can cure over 90% of cases, but the survey showed a need for clearer, year‑round information. Florencia Mezzadra, manager of Fundación Instituto Natura, said, “The Index shows we still have a concrete opportunity to strengthen information and broaden how we talk about breast‑health care.”
A parallel report from the Hospital de Clínicas (UBA) found that among women over 50, 52% displayed atheroma plaques and nearly half mistakenly linked mortality mainly to cancer. Cardiovascular disease, the world’s top cause of death in women, is especially risky after menopause and for those with female‑specific factors such as pregnancy‑related hypertension or gestational diabetes. Doctors stressed that most cardiovascular deaths are preventable with early detection and lifestyle changes.
Both reports underscore significant gaps in women's health knowledge and preventive care in Argentina, calling for sustained public education and improved screening.
