Argentina's industrial output and employment plunge amid deepening recession

Industrial activity in Argentina continued to contract in the first half of 2026. The Union Industrial Argentina (UIA) reported a 1.8% year‑on‑year decline in June and a cumulative 3% drop for the semester, with the sector still about 10% below 2022‑2023 levels. Production fell across most manufacturing branches, notably textiles (‑26.2%), machinery (‑23.4%) and apparel (‑14.7%).

The labour market showed a sharp deterioration. Official data confirmed a loss of 141,700 formal jobs in the last twelve months, amounting to 329,600 jobs lost since President Javier Milei took office. An analysis of social security records added that 369,463 registered positions disappeared between December 2023 and March 2026. In Entre Ríos, legislators counted 1,074 firm closures and 8,821 job losses since late 2023. The textile sector suffered a 73% surge in clothing imports and the loss of roughly 24,000 jobs.

Consumer demand kept weakening. Scentia’s June survey showed a 2.7% year‑on‑year fall in retail volume, while supermarket sales recorded a fifth consecutive decline and a 0.7% drop in May‑June totals. Fuel sales also slipped, with June dispensing 1,331,423 m³ – a 2.9% year‑on‑year decrease and a fifth straight month of lower sales. The combined slowdown in production, employment and consumption highlights the depth of Argentina’s ongoing recession.
