Argentina fuel tax distribution lacks road kilometer metric
The distribution of fuel tax revenue in Argentina currently lacks a component based on the actual number of road kilometers in each province. According to Osvaldo Romagnoli, president of the Federal Road Council, the current formula relies on a weighting of provincial road networks, the number of fuel contributors, population density, and merit, rather than direct mileage.
Under the existing legal framework, the distribution is calculated using several factors: 30% is divided equally among provinces, 20% based on population, 20% based on provincial road resource investment, and 30% based on gasoline and diesel consumption. This method creates significant disparities in funding per kilometer. For example, Tierra del Fuego receives 5,934 pesos per kilometer, while Santiago del Estero, which holds the second-largest road network in the country, receives only 498 pesos per kilometer. Buenos Aires, which has the largest network, receives 1,613 pesos per kilometer.
