Argentina government nears agreement with public universities on financing and salaries

Argentina's national government and the country's public universities are reported to be close to finalising an agreement that would resolve the long‑standing financing dispute. The executive has softened its demand that universities withdraw the lawsuit filed over the Law of University Financing, allowing negotiations to move forward.

The proposed deal includes a 24.33% recomposition of university staff salaries – 21.33% to be applied immediately and an additional 3% later – as well as a 50% increase in Manuel Belgrano scholarships for strategic degree programmes and an extra AR$50 billion earmarked for university hospitals. Union bodies such as Conadu are set to decide this week whether to accept the offer; acceptance would end a planned nationwide strike scheduled for 16‑20 June. The judicial conflict remains pending before the Supreme Court, which has suspended the previously granted precautionary measure.

If the unions approve the terms, the agreement would end the current protest deadlock and restore funding to the university system.
