Argentina disability reform project gains majority support in Congress

The Argentine government has secured a majority report in the Chamber of Deputies for its “Strengthening, Sustainability, and Permanent Efficiency in the Disability System” project. This legislative initiative aims to replace the current disability emergency regime with a permanent framework. The project received 42 signatures, including support from the PRO and UCR parties, though some provincial blocks dissented.

The proposal follows significant controversy regarding the 2027 Budget, which includes a 26.7% real spending reduction. To address opposition concerns, the government agreed to maintain monthly inflation-linked updates for pensions and allow beneficiaries to hold formal employment without losing benefits. The project also seeks to maintain the universal nomenclator for services and implement bimonthly updates for providers.

In contrast to the national debate, the Córdoba provincial government announced it is allocating $230 billion to the disability sector for 2026, representing an 80% increase from 2025 levels to support over 350 non-governmental institutions.
