Argentina granted extension by U.S. Supreme Court in YPF litigation

The United States Supreme Court has granted the Argentine government an extension to respond to a petition filed by plaintiffs in the YPF expropriation lawsuit. The extension provides the state and the company until December 2 to present their arguments to the high court.

The original deadline was November 2. The request for a 30-day extension was made by lawyers representing both the Argentine state and YPF to allow more time to prepare their legal filings. This procedural move does not indicate a decision on the merits of the case; the court must still decide whether or not to review the appellate court's ruling, which previously exonerated Argentina from a $16 billion payment.

The litigation stems from the 2012 nationalization of the oil company YPF during the administration of Cristina Kirchner. The lawsuit, funded by Burford Capital, was initiated by Petersen Energía, Petersen Energía Inversora, and Eton Park, who claim the expropriation violated the company's statutes.
