Argentina grapples with rising informal employment and strained social assistance
Argentina's government acknowledges deepening social and labour challenges. Córdoba's Social Development Minister Marcos Torres said the country's social fabric is in a “very complex” stage, noting a surge in assistance requests that now focus on food rather than home repairs. He highlighted the province's effort to keep social programmes running despite reduced tax revenues and cited initiatives such as the +26 employment scheme and the Córdoba Me Capacita program offering 2,600 short courses.
Economy Minister Luis Caputo linked social justice to access to jobs and private credit, describing the credit market as stalled after the political shock of the previous year. The Treasury aims to mobilise part of the roughly $170 billion Argentines hold abroad and promoted the Inocencia Fiscal project to restore confidence among savers.
Labour data released by the Instituto Argentina Grande show that 85 % of newly created jobs are informal – about 201,000 of 238,000 new positions – while registered employment fell by 141,700 jobs in the past year. Monotributo registrations rose by only 49,500, and the overall number of contributors dropped by 622,300 against an increase of 426,261 beneficiaries, deepening fiscal imbalances.
