Argentina: Historic rural grocery stores preserved by families

In the rural regions of Buenos Aires province, Argentina, historic family-run grocery stores are being preserved through generational efforts.

In the area between Arrecifes, San Pedro, and Capitán Sarmiento, a century-old warehouse has reopened. Managed by Silvia, a descendant of the original owners, the establishment serves as both a commercial space and an informal museum. The shop features historical items such as antique scales, glass jars, and field tools, while also acting as a repository for local legends and community history.

Similarly, in Gómez, the Almacén El Pato has remained operational since 1985 under the management of Elisa Luján Pascal, known as ‘Tita’. Originally purchased by her parents, the business has evolved from a traditional warehouse into a popular stop for cyclists and motorcyclists. The establishment is noted for its traditional sandwiches and its role as a local landmark.
