Argentina hits record number of engineering graduates amid specialized labor shortages
Argentina has reached a historic milestone in engineering education, with 8,759 graduates in 2024. This represents an 8.4% increase from 2023 and the highest number of graduates recorded since 2007, excluding agricultural engineering. Projections suggest this upward trend will continue, potentially exceeding 10,000 annual graduates by 2027 and reaching 12,000 by 2030.
Despite the overall growth, a significant gap exists between the available talent and the needs of strategic industrial sectors. While Industrial and Information Systems engineering lead in graduate numbers, there is a critical shortage in specialized fields such as Petroleum (63 graduates), Mining (19 graduates), Electrical (170), and Electromechanical (314) engineering. This deficit is particularly concerning for the energy and mining sectors, including the Vaca Muerta region.
According to the Argentine Engineering Monitor 2026, 47% of surveyed companies already face difficulties recruiting engineers, and 87% believe the supply of professionals will be insufficient over the next three to five years. Additionally, women are driving much of the enrollment growth; female enrollment nearly doubled between 2014 and 2024, whereas male enrollment grew by only 42.9%.
