Las Leonas draw 1-1 against United States in World Cup debut
The Argentina women’s national field hockey team, known as Las Leonas, drew 1-1 against the United States in their opening match of the 2026 World Cup held in Belgium and the Netherlands. Playing at the Belfius Hockey Arena in Wavre, Argentina took an early lead in the first quarter when Brisa Bruggesser scored following an assist from María José Granatto.
However, the United States equalized in the second quarter through Emma Deberdine. Despite controlling much of the match and earning six penalty corners, the Argentine side was unable to convert further opportunities, partly due to strong performances by U.S. goalkeeper Kelsey Bing.
Argentina remains a top contender for the title, having finished as runners-up in the previous World Cup. Their next Group B match is scheduled against Germany on Monday, August 17, followed by a final group stage game against Scotland on Wednesday, August 19.
