Argentina holds events to commemorate 50 years since 1976 coup
Commemorative events are being held in Argentina to mark the 50th anniversary of the 1976 military coup, focusing on historical memory, human rights, and the fight against denialism.
In Azul, the 2nd Local and Regional Identity Congress is underway at SUMAC. The event, themed “Memory, Truth, and Justice,” brings together authorities, academics, and students to reflect on historical roots and democratic commitments. Local officials, including Mayor Nelson Sombra, emphasized the importance of recognizing cultural struggles and the legacy of organizations like the Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo in defending identity as a right.
In Chacabuco, the second edition of “Operación Chacabuco” by Juan José Chazarreta was presented at the Universidad Tecnológica Nacional. The work analyzes the impact of the ideas that led to the military dictatorship and includes corrections intended to oppose historical denialism. Chazarreta noted that the de facto government sought to impose an economic model against the established welfare state, and he provided a localized account of the dictatorship's impact on the Chacabuco region.
