Argentina holds record $59 billion debt with IMF

Argentina has become the largest debtor to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), holding an outstanding credit of $59.147 billion. This amount represents approximately 35% of the IMF's entire global loan portfolio, a figure that exceeds Ukraine's debt by more than four times.

As part of a technical mission currently in Buenos Aires, the Argentine government is preparing to meet an $800 million capital maturity this Friday. This payment is part of a $20 billion program signed in 2025. To settle the obligation, the Ministry of Economy intends to use foreign currency deposits held at the Central Bank to acquire Special Drawing Rights (SDRs), the IMF's unit of account.

The technical mission is conducting a third review of the economic program to analyze performance against established goals. The release of a subsequent $1 billion disbursement remains contingent upon the successful approval of this review stage.
