Argentina hosts native seed fairs to promote agroecology

Argentina has hosted significant seed fairs focused on the preservation of native and creole seeds, highlighting the importance of agroecology and biodiversity.

In Catamarca, the Provincial Fair of Native and Creole Seeds was held in Los Nacimientos, Fiambalá. Organized by the Association of Abaucán Peasants (Acampa) and Bienaventurados los Pobres (BePe), the event featured over 200 stalls where families exchanged seeds, plants, animals, and regional products. The fair serves as a symbol of local agricultural resilience and a rejection of large-scale mining projects in the region.

In Berazategui, the “Sembrando Esperanza” event combined the 5th National and 10th Provincial Seed Fair with the 4th Biodiversity Festival. Attended by Buenos Aires Province Minister of Agrarian Development Javier Rodríguez, the gathering brought together producers, universities, and researchers to promote seed sovereignty and prevent producer dependence on monopolies.
