Argentina faces surge in household debt and business closures
Argentina is facing a severe economic crisis characterized by surging household debt and widespread business closures. In Buenos Aires, protesters and social movements have marched to the Ministry of Economy to demand urgent solutions for the growing debt burden.
Data from the Central Bank indicates that approximately 5.8 million people are more than 90 days overdue on debt payments, a figure that has tripled over the last year to reach a 20-year high. Most defaults involve personal loans and credit cards. Analysts attribute this to stagnant incomes and rising costs of living, particularly utility bills, since President Javier Milei took office in December 2023.
The business sector is also under extreme pressure. Reports from Fundar and CEPA indicate that over 30,000 companies—roughly 6% of all businesses—have closed since the current administration began, with the trade sector suffering the most significant losses. Non-payment rates for household credit have climbed from 2.5% in October 2024 to 12.8% by June 2026.
