Argentina implements IMF-backed economic plan to drive growth
The Argentine government has begun implementing an economic agenda endorsed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The plan aims to transform macroeconomic stability into sustainable growth while maintaining strict fiscal discipline to reduce inflation.
Economy Minister Luis Caputo and his team are working to ensure that growth in sectors such as agriculture, energy, and mining translates into the broader domestic economy. One key strategy involves increasing credit availability for businesses, particularly in the construction sector. Banks currently hold approximately US$40 billion in dollar deposits, with a potential lending capacity of US$6 billion.
Finance Secretary Federico Furiase noted that increasing productivity and real wages requires investment financed by savings. The government is also seeking legislative changes to the Fiscal Innocence law to encourage the use of informal dollar savings, which could provide more funding and lower interest rates for bank loans.
