Argentina's BCRA purchases US$ 160 million as reserves hit June lows

The Central Bank of the Argentine Republic (BCRA) has seen fluctuations in its foreign reserves and exchange rate interventions. On Wednesday, September 30, the BCRA purchased US$ 160 million in the exchange market, contributing to a total of US$ 473 million in purchases for September. Despite these interventions, gross international reserves fell to US$ 46,090 million, the lowest level since late June, partly due to month-end banking adjustments.

On October 1, the wholesale exchange rate broke a downward trend, rising 0.4% to close at 1,523 pesos. The official retail dollar averaged approximately 1,539.87 pesos for sale. The gap between the current rate and the BCRA's established ceiling of 1,920.44 pesos remains significant at 26%.

The Argentine government is implementing a three-pronged strategy to manage dollar volatility, including interventions in the futures market and the use of 'dólar linked' bonds to provide coverage against peso depreciation. While the BCRA has acquired US$ 14,568 million since January 5, the pace of accumulation has slowed recently due to seasonal decreases in dollar supply.
