Argentina regional economies face crisis as yerba mate and forestry sectors hit red zone
Argentina's regional economies are facing significant distress, according to the July 2026 CONINAGRO 'Semáforo de Economías Regionales'. The report indicates that nine activities are in the red zone, six are in yellow, and four are in green.
Key sectors in critical condition include yerba mate, which has remained in the red for 28 consecutive months, and the forestry industry, which recently dropped from yellow to red. Other activities in the red category include rice, wine, vegetables, cotton, milk, cassava, and citrus. In contrast, the bovine, ovine, grain, and honey sectors remain in the green zone.
The yerba mate sector is particularly strained; producers received approximately 260,000 pesos per ton of green leaf in July, representing a 13% real decrease compared to the previous year. Officials in Misiones have expressed concern that deregulation and inequitable profit distribution are concentrating wealth in the industrial sector at the expense of small producers.
Additionally, the forestry sector is struggling with a 40% drop in domestic wood consumption compared to historical peaks. While export flexibility has provided some relief for large companies, the overall industry faces high logistics costs and a lack of credit. The broader economic context is marked by a contraction in GDP and a push by the government to integrate informal dollar savings into the formal financial system.
