Latin American and Spanish regions implement diverse recycling and sustainability initiatives
Various municipalities and organizations across Latin America and Spain are launching initiatives to improve waste management and environmental sustainability.
In Mexico, the Ecology Department in Ciudad Juárez reported significant collections of recyclable materials, including 135 tons of bulky waste and four tons of electronic waste during August and September. Similarly, in Argentina, the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) is promoting the collection of electronic waste (RAEE), having recovered over 2,000 devices since 2023. In Balcarce, Argentina, a local campaign successfully collected 5.5 tons of electronic waste.
In Chile, the first large-scale collective management system for electronic waste and batteries (GRANSIC TRAEE) has been established, involving 22 major brands to comply with extended producer responsibility laws. In Bolivia, the company Embol has proposed a plan to La Paz involving the installation of 200 plastic bottle containers and environmental training.
Other regional efforts include a glass-for-trees exchange program in Tarapoto, Peru, and the EcoCanje program in Argentina's Partido de La Costa, which exchanged plastic bottles for plants. In Spain, Sagunto is hosting a neighborhood competition to increase glass recycling, while Vidreres has partnered with the SERGI Foundation to mobilize empty housing for affordable rentals.
