Argentina income inequality rises as Gini coefficient hits 0.428

New data from INDEC indicates a rise in income inequality in Argentina during the second quarter of 2026. The Gini coefficient increased to 0.428, up from 0.424 in the second quarter of 2025. While there was a slight improvement compared to the first quarter of 2026 (0.442), the annual trend shows growing concentration.

The wealth gap remains significant, with the top 10% of earners concentrating 32.3% of total income, while the bottom 10% received only 1.8%. The income gap between the richest and poorest deciles is maintained at 13 times.

Economic hardship is also reflected in poverty and indigence rates. The poverty rate reached 32.3% in the first half of 2026, and the indigence rate stood at 7.5%. In the Rawson-Trelew area, approximately 15,000 people live below the indigence line. Additionally, nominal income growth of 29.3% failed to keep pace with inflation, resulting in a loss of real purchasing power.
