Argentina faces rising poverty and critical household debt
Argentina is facing significant economic challenges, characterized by rising poverty, declining consumption, and increasing household debt. Projections from the Universidad Torcuato Di Tella suggest a poverty rate of approximately 31.6% for the first half of 2026, while ExQuanti reports that 15.1 million people are currently in poverty.
Household debt is reaching critical levels, with reports indicating that 76% of debtors use credit to cover essential costs such as food, health, and utilities. In popular neighborhoods of Buenos Aires, 72.5% of surveyed households rely on credit for food, and 69.2% use it for hygiene and cleaning products.
Consumer activity is also retreating. Supermarket sales in July fell by 2.1% year-on-year, and mass consumption saw a cumulative year-to-date decline of 2.7%. In the Province of Buenos Aires, the labor market has suffered a loss of 106,136 registered jobs since November 2023. While wages saw a 2.8% increase in July, economists warn that purchasing power remains severely eroded. Additionally, private consultancies warn that September inflation could rebound toward 2% due to rising food and utility prices.
