Olivosgate: Corruption and nepotism allegations hit Argentine administration

Argentina is facing a political scandal known as ‘Olivosgate’ following allegations of corruption and nepotism within the presidential administration. Deputy Marcela Pagano has filed criminal complaints targeting several high-ranking officials and their associates.

Central to the allegations is María Belén Agudiez, a former subsecretary and close aide to Secretary General Karina Milei. Agudiez is accused of filling the Olivos residence and the General Secretariat with relatives, including her brother-in-law Osvaldo Sosa as residence manager and her cousin Agustín Expósito as a national director. Additionally, Agudiez’s personal assets reportedly grew from $43,000 to $4.5 million during her tenure.

The investigation also focuses on General Sebastián Ignacio Ibáñez, head of the Casa Militar, regarding irregular food procurement contracts. These contracts, totaling over $400 million for meat and produce, were intended for the Casa Rosada and the Olivos residence. Pagano alleges that resources may have been diverted to private catering businesses linked to former officials.

Following these controversies, the administration transferred administrative control of the Olivos residence to the Casa Militar on September 17, a move Pagano claims was intended to obscure documentation and facilitate the removal of civilian staff.
