Argentina joins US-led Geneva Consensus Declaration

Argentina has officially joined the Geneva Consensus Declaration, a US-led coalition of more than 40 countries that asserts there is no international right to abortion. The declaration focuses on the promotion of women's health and the strengthening of the family unit, emphasizing national sovereignty in health and family legislation.

Argentine Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno stated that the move aims to provide regional leadership and diplomatic capacity to an agenda based on human dignity. The decision aligns with the administration of President Javier Milei, which emphasizes life, liberty, and the rule of law. The declaration specifically notes that abortion should not be promoted as a method of family planning.

The United States, which currently serves as the secretariat for the coalition, welcomed Argentina's membership. US officials described the signing as an important step and expressed hope that more nations in the hemisphere will join the initiative. This move follows the US rejoining the coalition in early 2025.
