Argentina labor market: unemployment rises to 7.9% as informality hits 45%

Argentina's labor market showed significant deterioration in the second quarter of 2026, according to data from INDEC. The national unemployment rate rose to 7.9%, up from 7.6% in the same period of 2025. Labor informality has reached 45% of the workforce, a notable increase from previous levels.

Reports indicate a structural shift in employment composition. Between November 2023 and June 2026, 245,664 registered private sector jobs were lost, representing a 3.9% decrease. This loss was partially offset by an 8.3% increase in the monotributo regime, with 169,026 new entries. Analysts suggest this reflects a move toward more precarious, unprotected work rather than genuine entrepreneurship.

Economic consequences for workers are severe. Research from C-P Consultora highlights that transitioning from formal employment to self-employment can result in a real income loss of up to 27.8%. Those moving from registered private jobs to unregistered roles face a 13.9% reduction in purchasing power. Regional disparities are evident, with Gran Rosario recording the highest unemployment rate at 11.5%, while Santiago del Estero-La Banda maintained the lowest at 0.9%.
