Argentina labor updates: Rural transport requests and public sector warnings
In Tucumán, Germán Ferrari, the general secretary of the Argentine Union of Rural Workers and Stevedores (UATRE), met with Governor Osvaldo Jaldo to request free bus services for seasonal workers. Approximately 20,000 workers migrate to provinces such as Río Negro, Mendoza, and Neuquén during the thinning season, which begins in late October. This measure aims to provide economic stability for families following the conclusion of the citrus season, which left 35,000 temporary workers without employment.
Separately, in Entre Ríos, Oscar Muntes, general secretary of ATE Entre Ríos, warned state workers against participating in potential voluntary retirement programs. Muntes suggested that the provincial government might replicate a national program funded by a loan from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). The national program, established via Decree 1203/2026, involves a loan of up to $300 million to facilitate voluntary departures. ATE leadership has criticized the initiative, labeling it illegal and questioning the use of dollar-denominated debt to fund current expenditures.
