Argentina leads global IMF debt with $56.8 billion outstanding

Argentina is the world's largest debtor to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), with an outstanding balance of $56.8 billion as of early October 2026. This amount represents approximately 8.2% of the country's estimated GDP and exceeds the combined debt of the next six largest debtors.

Ukraine holds the second-largest position with $14.4 billion (6.4% of GDP), driven largely by economic disruptions from the Russian invasion. Pakistan follows with $10.8 billion, followed by Egypt at $10.6 billion and Ecuador at $9.4 billion (6.8% of GDP).

Argentina's high debt levels stem from a history of currency crises, high inflation, and limited access to international capital markets. Under President Javier Milei, the administration has implemented fiscal discipline and spending cuts to stabilize the economy and rebuild foreign reserves. A significant financing program approved in April 2025 included $20 billion in total funding, with an initial $12 billion tranche made available immediately.
