Argentina: Opposition seeks special session on debt and disability

Argentina's legislative landscape is marked by intense friction between the ruling La Libertad Avanza party and opposition blocks. The opposition has called for a special session in the Chamber of Deputies on Wednesday, September 9, to demand concrete deadlines for projects addressing family debt and the disability emergency. To achieve quorum, opposition groups require approximately 129 votes, a goal they are actively pursuing through negotiations with various provincial blocks.

In response, the government is attempting to manage its own legislative agenda through commissions, aiming to produce reports by late September. This strategy includes prioritizing economic reforms, such as the Central Bank Organic Charter reform and the Fiscal Innocence II law, which seeks to integrate offshore dollars into the formal system. The administration aims to finalize these measures before the 2027 Budget is introduced on September 15.

Social movements, including Libres del Sur and collectives representing indebted students and families, are organizing protests at the Congress to demand relief from rising debt and high interest rates. Meanwhile, the Senate is also focused on economic reforms and addressing the medical sector's salary demands through a crisis management table.
