Argentina may export natural gas to Bolivia by 2031
Argentina may begin exporting natural gas to Bolivia by 2031, reversing a two-decade trend where Bolivia was the primary supplier. According to a report by Alpes Energy, this shift is driven by a significant decline in Bolivian gas production and a substantial increase in Argentine output.
Bolivian production peaked in 2014 at 59.6 million cubic meters per day (MMm³/d) but is projected to drop to 26.6 MMm³/d by 2026. By 2031, production could fall to 15.3 MMm³/d, potentially leaving the country unable to meet its own domestic demand starting in 2032.
Conversely, production in Argentina’s Neuquén Basin grew by 56% between 2016 and early 2026, largely due to unconventional gas from the Vaca Muerta formation. To facilitate these potential exports, Argentina is utilizing infrastructure such as the reversal of the Northern Pipeline and the planned expansion of the Manuel Belgrano Pipeline, which is expected to be operational by April 2029.
