Argentina mental health professionals warn of unlicensed practitioners and youth crisis

Psychology professionals in Argentina are raising alarms regarding two major threats to mental health: the rise of unlicensed practitioners and the psychological impact of systemic youth instability.

The Colegio de Psicólogos de La Plata has warned against the proliferation of individuals offering psychological support under titles such as “facilitators,” “counselors,” or “guides” without formal university training or professional registration. These individuals often use social media to offer services that may include religious or dietary components, which experts state are not legitimate psychological treatments. This warning comes as Argentina reported a record high of 5,209 suicides in 2025, a 22.6 percent increase from the previous year.

Simultaneously, in regions like Neuquén, professionals are highlighting a mental health crisis among young people disconnected from education and the labor market. Data from the University of Buenos Aires indicates that nearly 49 percent of youth aged 18 to 29 are in a state of social vulnerability, with 20 percent completely disconnected from both school and work. High rates of informal employment and unemployment are contributing to increased levels of depression, anxiety, and substance abuse among the younger population.
