Argentina mining sector faces political uncertainty and massive electricity demand surge

An analysis presented at the Argentina Rocks forum outlined how the 2027 elections could shape the mining sector's investment climate. The discussion highlighted President Javier Milei’s declining popularity amid high inflation, but noted that his party retains a sizable electoral base. Two scenarios were outlined: a Milei re‑election would likely preserve the current economic and regulatory approach, while a moderate opposition win could bring variable reforms, though still constrained by a fragmented Congress and the pivotal role of provincial governors.

Separately, a report by the Latin American Energy Organization projected that Argentina’s mining electricity consumption will jump 428% over the next decade, rising from 1,256 GWh in 2024 to 6,630 GWh by 2034. The surge is driven primarily by large‑scale copper projects in the north‑west—Vicuña, Los Azules and El Pachón—centered in San Juan province. The forecast stresses the need for substantial new grid capacity, including a 500 kV transmission line whose initial priority allocation to Vicuña has already sparked disputes among operators.
