Argentina negotiates Malvinas sovereignty project in Congress

The Argentine government is intensifying negotiations with officialist, allied, and opposition deputies to advance the National Sovereignty Defense project for the Malvinas Islands. The initiative is scheduled for analysis on October 27 in a plenary session of the Defense, Criminal Legislation, and Foreign Relations committees.

The project proposes replacing Law 26,659 and introduces stricter sanctions for the unauthorized exploitation of natural resources in the islands and surrounding maritime spaces. Proposed penalties include up to 20 years in prison, disqualification from operating in Argentina, and the creation of a public registry of offenders.

Legislative discussions have also focused on a military protocol that includes the creation of a National Security Council. Some allied legislative blocks are requesting changes to these protocols, specifically seeking greater parliamentary oversight for military actions, such as the authorization of hostile aircraft interceptions or vessel sinkings.

Additionally, the United States has expressed concern regarding the potential impact of the proposed sanctions on American companies operating in the region.
