Argentina moves to declare national emergency on gender‑based violence

A recent survey by Zuban Córdoba y Asociados found that 92.6% of Argentine respondents support creating a public register of sexual offenders, with support rising to 95.2% among women. The poll, conducted in early June with more than 1,200 participants, also linked the issue to the femicide of 14‑year‑old Agostina Vega, which many said reflects broader structural violence against women.

In the legislative arena, opposition deputies passed a majority dictamen to declare a national public emergency on gender‑based violence for an initial two‑year period, with the option to extend. The measure, presented by the Women and Diversity commission, cites rising femicide figures—147 cases in 2024, between 200 and 271 in 2025, and 95‑105 so far in 2026—and calls for concrete resources, budget allocations, and enforcement of existing laws such as the Micaela law. Lawmakers emphasized that without political will and funding, new legislation would be ineffective.
