Argentina moves to strengthen digital safety for children with new council and legislative proposals

The Digital Protection Council for Children and Adolescents held its inaugural meeting in Buenos Aires, convened by Education Minister Mercedes Miguel and featuring specialists from education, technology and digital citizenship. The council is tasked with designing strategies and campaigns to promote safer, more conscious digital experiences for minors as part of the city’s broader digital‑citizenship initiative.

In a separate hearing, Dr. Lucas Moyano addressed the Chamber of Deputies' Commission on Families, Children and Youth, outlining current online threats such as non‑consensual intimate content, grooming, hate speech, gambling addiction, radicalisation and AI‑driven abuse. He called for specific legislation to limit algorithmic amplification, require internet service providers to retain connection data for two years, create unified investigative protocols and introduce school‑based intervention tools, urging tech companies to assume active cybersecurity responsibilities.
