Argentina municipalities boost mental health programs

Municipal authorities in Argentina are expanding mental‑health services. In Urdinarrain, the local Development Social Directorate and the provincial Mental Health Review Body held a community forum, urging a collective approach. Director Jordana Fritzler said, “Mental health concerns us all; it is not only for health professionals but a collective construction that touches families, institutions, schools and workplaces.”

In Bahía Blanca, the municipal health department organized a mental‑health and continuity‑of‑care day, presenting a new epidemiological report on suicide attempts and completions. Mayor Federico Susbielles emphasized, “We want to build public policies listening to those on the ground. The mental‑health program works, but it must evolve with the reality we face.” The report showed a completed‑suicide rate of 7.5 per 100,000, with 68 % of cases male and a median age of 42, while suicide‑attempts were 124.2 per 100,000, predominantly among women (66.8 %). The municipality’s “Red de Vidas” network now provides post‑discharge follow‑up, achieving contact with 41 % of cases and active monitoring of 74.7 % of them.
