Argentina Murga Shows Fuse Carnival, Tango and Social Themes

The Uruguayan murga Falta y Resto presented its new production “Murgotán” at the Teatro Municipal in Olavarría on 22 August. The show combines the traditional murga chorus and percussion with tango instrumentation such as bandoneón, piano and double‑bass, creating a hybrid sound that highlights both the collective energy of murga and the lyrical nostalgia of tango. The performance featured long‑time members Raúl “Tintabrava” Castro, El Zurdo Bessio, Pitufo Lombardo, Pinocho Routiny and vocalist Lucila Scariatto.

In Rosario, the local murga Y Parió La Abuela premiered its latest spectacle “El Más Acá… ¿Hay vida después del nacimiento?” on 8 August at the Sala Lavardén. The piece mixes music, theatre, humour and social commentary to explore themes of death and the meaning of life, inviting the audience to reflect on whether they are truly living in the present. Tickets were sold for 20 000 ARS. Both events illustrate a growing trend of Argentine murga groups expanding their artistic repertoire beyond traditional carnival formats.
