Argentina observes Green Cane Day to support low vision awareness

September 26 marks the National Green Cane Day in Argentina, a date dedicated to raising awareness for individuals with low vision. Unlike the traditional white cane used by people who are blind, the green cane specifically identifies those with low vision, who may retain some sight but face challenges with obstacles, reading, or navigating certain environments.

The green cane was invented in 1994 by Professor Perla Catherine Mayo and is recognized under National Law 25.682. The tool serves a social function by signaling that a person may be able to move autonomously while still requiring specific assistance, such as help interpreting signs or detecting obstacles.

In Tres Arroyos, the local municipality is participating in the commemoration by illuminating the local Statue of Liberty in green. The initiative, supported by the Biblioteca Popular Braille y Parlante «Ilusiones», includes educational campaigns and the distribution of instructional materials in local businesses to teach the public how to interact respectfully and effectively with people using green canes.
