Argentina Open to switch to hard courts in 2028
The Argentina Open, the premier tennis tournament in Argentina, is set to transition from clay to hard courts starting in 2028. This change marks the end of 27 consecutive editions played on clay. The move aims to attract more high-ranking ATP players who primarily compete on faster surfaces.
The tournament's license recently transitioned from Tennium to the ATP following an acquisition involving SURJ Sports Investment, the sports division of Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund. While the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club will remain the venue, significant infrastructure investment will be required to convert at least five courts, including the three main stadiums and two training courts.
Although the surface change is imminent, there are currently no plans to upgrade the tournament from its ATP 250 status to an ATP 500 category.
