Argentina passes law to regularize unregistered firearms

President Javier Milei signed Law 27.805, establishing a voluntary regularization regime for civil firearms that are unregistered or have irregular documentation. The law mandates that owners submit a formal request to the National Agency of Controlled Materials (ANMAC) within 360 days of its entry into force, after which the weapons and their owners will be entered into the National Informatized Database of Controlled Materials.

ANMAC will conduct technical, administrative and registry checks and may reject applications for prohibited weapons, altered identification data or missing essential documents. If serious irregularities are found, the agency can initiate confiscation. The legislation also extends the National Voluntary Firearms Surrender Program until the end of 2027, allowing owners to hand over weapons anonymously with state compensation. Persons who regularize before any criminal investigation are exempt from criminal and administrative penalties, provided they have no prior illegal‑possession case.

The law aims to improve control and traceability of firearms in circulation and to reduce the risks associated with undeclared weapons.
