Argentina commemorates National Retiree Day and pension system history
Argentina observes the National Retiree Day, marking the anniversary of the 1904 Law 4,349 which established the country's first pension system under President Julio A. Roca. The historical evolution of the system includes the transition to a solidarity-based model under Juan Domingo Perón in 1954, the implementation of private contribution systems during the Carlos Menem administration, and the return to a public distributive model via Law 26,425 under Cristina Fernández de Kirchner.
Currently, the pension landscape faces significant tension. Retirees have intensified protests against the administration of Javier Milei, citing economic adjustments and cuts. In various provinces, including Formosa, Tucumán, and La Rioja, government authorities have announced specific payment schedules for state employees and retirees, including salary increases and minimum guaranteed amounts.
In addition to policy and economic developments, local communities across Argentina are holding various commemorative events, such as lunches and social gatherings, to honor senior citizens. Meanwhile, social security agencies like ANSES and provincial institutes are issuing guidance on service recognition and warnings regarding telephone scams targeting the elderly.
