Argentina: Police protests, corruption probes, and fraud convictions

Various legal and social issues involving law enforcement and personnel are unfolding across Argentina. In Tierra del Fuego, retired police officers have escalated their protests by setting up a permanent tent in front of the Northern Regional Unit. The demonstrators are protesting 15 months of partial non-payment of pension benefits, which they attribute to a financial crisis at CAMPOLTER.

In El Calafate, a judicial investigation into more than 60 police officers for alleged dereliction of duty during a 50-day salary protest is stalling due to a lack of evidence. Local police chiefs testified that no significant service abandonment or community endangerment occurred during the strike.

In Salta, an investigation has expanded into a corruption scandal involving a police officer accused of accepting bribes to facilitate institutional benefits such as transfers and leaves. Internal Affairs has confiscated the officer's service weapon as the probe continues.

In San Juan, a prison officer, Alejandro Jofré, was sentenced to four years in prison for defrauding colleagues. He allegedly promised high-return investments to fellow officers, resulting in a total loss exceeding 264 million pesos.
